Pompeo urges “fresh thinking to solve old problems” in Middle East
Description
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo speaks to leaders at the United Nations Security Council on August 20, Tuesday, urging for greater collaboration and “fresh thinking to solve old problems” in the Middle East.
Pompeo reminds leaders of the discussions at the Warsaw meeting.
[Mike Pompeo, U.S. Secretary of State]:
"Today's meeting built on what we started last February in Warsaw at the minister up to promote a future of peace and security in the Middle East. More than 60 countries met there to find new solutions to old challenges and one of the most troubled regions of the world. We spent a good deal of time at the Warsaw ministerial discussing the greatest ongoing threat to peace and security in the region—the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
The U.S. secretary of state condemns Iran during the press conference.
[Mike Pompeo, U.S. Secretary of State]:
“I use my time today to condemn the regime's support to proxies in Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen … Iran's continued development of testing of advanced ballistic missiles in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolution 2231 is also an issue that the international community must address."
