President Trump presents an American hero with the Medal of Honor

The Medal of Honor is the United States of America's highest and most prestigious personal military decoration that may be awarded to recognize U.S. military service members who have distinguished themselves by acts of valor.

Army Staff Sgt. Travis Atkins, 31, of Bozeman, Montana, was trying to subdue a suspected insurgent in June 2007 when he realized the man was attempting to detonate a bomb strapped to his body. Atkins reacted quickly to cover the bomber's body with his own in a selfless act that officials said saved fellow three soldiers.

President Donald Trump presented the Staff Sgt. Atkins family with the Medal of Honor, for his heroic act of bravery against an enemy.

Atkins' initial award, the Distinguished Service Cross, was upgraded to the Medal of Honor after a Defense Department review. According to the Washington Post, Members of the Atkins family told reporters Tuesday that they were appreciative of the Distinguished Service Cross and did not believe that Atkins’s award would be elevated when the White House reached out to them. Wednesday was the eighth time President Trump has presented the award.

Atkins son, Trevor and his parents, represented him at a White House ceremony Wednesday afternoon.

Staff Sgt. Travis Atkins was on his second tour of duty in Iraq and overseeing a 15-soldier squad at the time of his death, just one month after his promotion to Staff Sergeant.
